The BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT
The Black Arts Movement began in 1965 after the assassination of Malcolm X and Amiri Baraka becomes a Black Nationalist and moves to Harlem. Baraka founded BARTS and coined the name "Black Arts". Groups like the Umbra Workshop and the Harlem Writers Guild were what helped the Black Arts Movement along. African American theater groups, culture centers, poetry performances, and African American publications were established. This was a time when African American artists came together and expressed themselves through any art form at whatever venue they could find. Click here for more information.
